• Don’t leave anything on display. 50p coins are temptation enough and have been stolen from cars. Make sure you lock your car doors and windows.

• Don’t hide your valuables in a glove box.

• Try and prevent wing mirrors being knocked off by pushing them in when you leave your car.

• Always lock your bicycle, even if you are just leaving it for a couple of minutes .

• Avoid isolated places; leave your bike where it can be seen.

• Hardened steel D-shaped locks are recommended as the minimum lock standard.

• Lock your bike to an immovable object – a bike rack or ground anchors; thieves can remove drainpipes and lift bikes off signposts.

• Stop thieves smashing locks open by keeping the lock away from the ground. Keep the gap between bike and lock small.

• Secure removable parts. Lock both wheels and the frame together.

• Robbers are after an easy target. Walk in groups at night, travel by taxi or stay over with friends.

• When out and about keep an eye on your handbag/wallet/bag.

• If possible, use cash-machines during the day - never write down your PIN.

• Keep cards and cheque books separately. Note down your account details so you can cancel them quickly.

• After a night out, arrange to go home with friends, or in a taxi.

• Book taxis in advance from a listed company, don’t get into an unlicensed vehicle. Ask to see I.D. if not displayed. Try not to travel alone but if alone sit behind the driver not in the passenger seat.  FAQ link here

• To prevent spiking, don't leave drinks unattended.

• Remove valuables from view at your property and take home for the holidays.

The booklet that you can download on the right by clicking on the image gives you information about consumer advice including buying goods, mobile phones, shopping on the internet.

There is a section on; going out with advice on safe drinking, safe taxi, body piercing and tattooing and laughing gas.

The guidance is produced by the Health Improvement Team at Public Protection, in conjunction with Trading Standards, Noise Pollution, Food Safety and Licensing at Cardiff Council and contains all the relevant contact information for those council departments.
