NHS

As a student living in Cardiff you can register with an practice  you choose (provided you live within the practice's catchment area). You should contact the practice of your choice as soon as possible to register or to ask for further information. If, for any reason, you are unable to register with a local practice you can contact the NHS Business Services Centre (BSC) on 01495 332000. The BSC will be able to allocate you to a practice close to where you are living.

Don't wait until you become ill to register with a practice. You should register with a practice as soon as possible when you arrive in Cardiff to ensure that you have easy access to services when you need them.

Information for Students on Registering with a General Practice

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board have worked in partnership with general practices and Cardiff University to ensure that students are able to register with a general practice.

This list (download here) gives you a guide to where they can register pending on which hall you live. Students are encouraged to use the list that is allocated to their place of residence.

When students move to a new practice, they need take along their NHS medical card. This has details of the patient’s current practice, and NHS number and will make it easier for students to register. The NHS number ensures that the new practice will be sent the medical records quickly.

If students do not have an NHS card, they can get the NHS number from their current practice. It is a good idea to write this down along with your name and address. Keep this information safe because you’ll need it whenever you move practices.

If you are having difficulties in finding a doctor, please contact the Business Services Centre, Mamhilad Park Estate, Pontypool on 01495 332000.
